Environmental Task Force
The Environmental Task Force is a new initiative that is part of the Special Issues Department of MCR-SGA. Its 18 members are dedicated to raising awareness of various aspects of our environment and mobilizing MoCo students to advocate for environmental issues.
This task force has organized a Climate Forum of 3 esteemed speakers and 100+ RSVPs and is currently working to testify for improved maintenance of school water stations, distribute reusable masks to those in need, and create a series of informational videos /interviews about the Chesapeake Bay.
Policy KEA
Recently, there has been a surge in student advocacy events on the national and local level. MCR urges the MCPS Board of Education to support student advocacy by supporting policy KEA, which allows students to have three excused absences for the purpose of civic engagement.
While the resolution failed to pass through the Board of Education, MCR wants to demonstrate the student's strong desire for this resolution to be passed through this task force, now advocating for two excused absences for the purpose of civic engagement. This task force will hold monthly in-person meetings to conduct research, raise student awareness, and hold advocacy events with students and officials.
Pedestrian Safety
There have been many tragic student deaths from transportation-related accidents. We feel that it is our responsibility to work with the MCPS Board of Education and County Council to work to make our streets safer as soon as possible.
This task force will hold monthly in-person meetings and online meetings to conduct research, raise student awareness, and hold advocacy events with students and officials. We hope not only to advocate for our roads to be made safer, but also encourage students to practice safe driving, biking, and walking habits via awareness campaigns.
Mental & Physical
Health
While MCR's advocacy has helped slow down the surge of tragic suicides in Montgomery County, there is still more work to be done. We plan to continue advocating for the expansion of county and school wide mental health programs and the proper staffing of school counselors and psychologists to help students in times of need.
MCR also recognizes the recent vaping crisis and has been working with county officials to take actions to slow down and ultimately stop this crisis. This task force will also advocate for resolutions regarding school nutrition, physical education, and other health-related items. This task force will hold monthly in-person meetings to conduct research, raise student awareness, and hold advocacy events with students and officials.
Boundary Study
The MCPS Board of Education passed a resolution, which was moved by the former Student Member of the Board, to run a study concerning achievement, demographics, and overcrowding by investigating school boundary lines. There was strong opposition for this study by various non-student groups.
MCR feels that as the countywide student governing body, it is our responsibility to represent the student's voice, which urges the study to be carried out. This task force will hold monthly in-person meetings to conduct research, raise student awareness, and hold advocacy events with students and officials.
